What is Aluminum Investment Casting?
Also known as precision casting or lost-wax casting, aluminum investment casting is a refined process that enables the creation of complex and accurate parts. The process begins with a wax pattern that replicates the desired component. This pattern is coated in layers of ceramic slurry to form a shell. Once the shell is hardened, the wax is melted out, leaving a cavity into which molten aluminum is poured. After cooling, the ceramic shell is removed, revealing a highly detailed aluminum casting ready for finishing.
The Aluminum Investment Casting Process
- Wax Pattern Creation – A wax model of the part is made, often assembled into a tree structure for multiple castings.
- Shell Building – The wax assembly is dipped in ceramic slurry and coated with sand repeatedly to form a durable shell.
- Wax Removal – The shell is heated to melt and drain out the wax, leaving a hollow mold.
- Casting – Preheated molds are filled with molten aluminum to ensure proper flow and minimal defects.
- Cooling and Shell Removal – Once cooled, the ceramic shell is broken away to extract the solid aluminum parts.
- Finishing – Operations such as trimming, sandblasting, machining, and heat treatment enhance the part’s accuracy and surface quality.
